First Steps to Counselling Skills

10 week course

By the end of the course students will understand the concepts of counselling and how these skills can be used in both personal and professional areas.it aims to improve a person’s physical and mental well-being, and assist individuals in making informed choices regarding further education and career paths.

The course will cover:

  • the personal attributes of a counsellor
  • Identifying counselling skills
  • Elicit existing understanding of what Empathy means including paraphrasing ans reflecting
  • considering unconditional positive regard
  • self-awareness of prejudice and stereotyping
  • Understanding: body language, responses, shared understanding and active listening
  • Identifying the advantages and disadvantages of the various schools of counselling
